
Toledo volleyball earned its 18th consecutive AVCA Team Academic Award on Monday.
Toledo Earns 18th Straight AVCA Team Academic Award

Toledo, Ohio— For the 18th straight year, the University of Toledo volleyball program earned the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award.
Toledo, along with Bowling Green and Indiana State, are the only NCAA Division I programs to have streaks of at least 15 years earning the academic honor. UT and BGSU are tied for the second longest active streak at 18 while Indiana State has received the honor 20 years in a row. Within the Mid-American Conference, eight teams in total earned the academic honor.
The award, which was initiated by the AVCA in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
Overall, the AVCA announced that a record-breaking 973 teams earned the academic honor in 2017-18, breaking the previous total of 822 set in 2016-17.
Toledo will visit Oakland University in an exhibition match on Saturday, August 18 before beginning the 2018 season on the road at the Golden Dome Invitational in South Bend, Ind. on August 24-25.

Since 2000-01 season, the number of recipients have increased every single year but two, while amassing a 619 team increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the amount of award winners has increased from 62 to its current number of 973.
