Yenrick, Curry Power Rockets Past Bowling Green, 8-2

TOLEDO, Ohio - Freshmen Bekah Yenrick and Bailey Curry each hit home runs to lead the Rockets to an 8-2 win over Bowling Green in the series opener on Friday at Scott Park. Toledo improves to 23-13 overall, 7-1 in the Mid-American Conference, while BGSU drops to 18-16, 1-6 in league play.

Toledo 8, Bowling Green 2
The youth movement was in full effect on Friday afternoon as all six Rocket hits came off the bats of freshmen. Curry led the charge with a 2-for-3 day and three RBIs, while Kylie Norwood drove in two and scored a run herself.

Junior Heather Webb recorded her 11th win of the year in the circle. Webb tossed 4.0 no-hit innings and matched a career-high with eight strikeouts.

How it Happened
  • Freshman Bekah Yenrick pushed Toledo out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning with a two-out solo home run to center field.
  • Bowling Green responded with a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead over Toledo. A lead off double, followed by a single put two runners aboard with no outs. After a stolen base, a two-run single up the middle staked BGSU its only lead of the game.
  • Webb replaced junior Kailey Minarchick and set down the Falcons in order in the fourth.
  • The Rockets regained the lead thanks to two Bowling Green errors on one play. A booted ball by the shortstops and an overthrow by the center fielder carouseled seniors Ashley Rausch and Sam Showalter around to score.
  • Toledo ballooned the lead to 8-2 with a big five-run fifth inning. Freshman Ami Ill doubled to left center and junior Kaitlyn Bergman reached safely on a sacrifice bunt. Ill and sophomore pinch runner Samantha Golden raced home on a two-run double in the right center gap from Norwood.
  • Freshman Ebony Garza singled to right and Curry capped the rally with a three-run blast over the fence in right center field.
  • The lead was more than enough in support of Webb. Webb retired 12 of the 13 batters she faced and did not allow a hit on the day.
The Rockets and the Falcons meet tomorrow, April 7, for a doubleheader beginning at 1:05 p.m.
