Toledo Tripped Up by Eastern Michigan, 6-3

Toledo, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team (13-22, 7-7 MAC) dropped game two of its series against Eastern Michigan (14-21, 8-6 MAC) on Saturday, 6-3.

The Eagles led for almost the entire game after taking a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. EMU scored two more in the top of the sixth to take a 5-0 lead and, despite late runs by the Rockets, would hold on to win and even the series at 1-1.

Senior Sam Shutes was handed his first loss of the season, totaling five innings with seven strikeouts while allowing four runs. Sophomore Layne Schnitz-Paxton threw 2.1 innings out of the bullpen and was fantastic for UT in the seventh and eighth frames.

At the plate, freshman Trace Hatfield had a career-high four hits as Toledo's No. 2 hitter on Saturday. Seniors AJ Montoya and Corey Tipton both had a two hits, and Tipton drove in two of the three UT runs. Freshman Zach Schwartzenberger had a clutch RBI single in the eighth inning coming off the bench.

The Rockets and Eagles will conclude their series on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at Scott Park.

How it Happened
  • The biggest swing of the game came in the top of the first. EMU's Kolton Schenker hit a two-out, three-run home run to right field that gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead right off the bat.
  • Two more Eastern Michigan runs scored on a single to left field, putting UT in a 5-0 hole.
  • The Toledo offense had plenty of chances, but struggled to capitalize. The Rockets had a hit in every inning on Saturday and scored their first runs in the bottom of the sixth. Tipton's two-run triple off the wall in left field made the score 5-2.
  • Schnitz-Paxton relieved Shutes in the sixth inning and had his best stuff working for him on the mound. The sophomore had great movement on his breaking balls and was making the Eagles' hitters look silly in the later stages of the game, tallying three strikeouts.
  • Pinch-hitting in the bottom of the eighth, Schwartzenberger lined a two-out, two-strike pitch into left field that brought in Montoya and put the Rockets within two, 5-3.
  • Toledo ran into some trouble on the mound in the top of the ninth. Eastern Michigan loaded the bases with no outs and scored a run on a bases-loaded walk that would bring the score to 6-3.
