Toledo, Ohio— Junior libero Maurissa Leonard was named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week, the league office announced on Tuesday.
A preseason All-MAC West selection, this is the fifth time Leonard has earned a weekly accolade from the MAC in her career.
At the BG/UT Invitational this past weekend, the junior averaged a terrific 5.7 digs per set in matches against Southeastern Louisiana, VCU, and Notre Dame. Leonard tallied 19 digs against the Lions in a three-game sweep, 18 against the Rams, and 20 against the Fighting Irish, the second time she's had at least 20 digs in a game this season; the other instance came in the season-opener against SIU Edwardsville when she had 26. She was the match leader in digs for two of those three matches. She also contributed four service aces in the win over Southeastern Louisiana, doing her part in the victory.
For the season, Leonard is averaging 4.54 digs per set, which is the most on the Rockets and fourth-most in the MAC. Last season she set the school record in that category, recording 569 digs, and as a freshman she had 507 (fourth-most in school history). In terms of digs/set she holds the second and fourth-best single-season rates in Toledo history.
This weekend Leonard and the rest of the Toledo women's volleyball team heads out to Huntington, W. Va. for the Thunder Invite, with matches scheduled against Maryland, Marshall, and Virginia Tech. More information on this weekend's matches to follow.
