Maurissa Leonard Named MAC West Defensive Player of the Week

TOLEDO, OH – Toledo's freshman standout Maurissa Leonard was named the Mid-American Conference's West Division Defensive Player of the Week for the second consecutive week, the league announced on Tuesday. This is the second time the Rockets' libero has received this honor in her career and the second time this season a Rocket has earned the accolade.

"Maurissa had another outstanding week defensively!" said head coach Greg Smith. "She continues to work hard and progress each week which is great to see."

    Leonard, an Oregon, OH native, tied her personal-best with a team-high 32 digs vs. Western Michigan. Against NIU, Leonard topped the Rockets' backcourt with 21 digs. Over the weekend, Leonard recorded receiving percentages of .889 vs. WMU and .938 vs. NIU. She tallied only five total reception errors and averaged an impressive 6.62 dps.

    Leonard currently leads the league with 5.82 dps in conference play and has recorded only 11 reception errors on the season (.16 per set).

    The Rockets are on the road for their next four matches. Toledo plays Eastern Michigan on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Ypsilanti, MI, before heading to Mount Pleasant, MI to meet Central Michigan on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7:00 p.m.
