The University of Toledo Cheerleading 2024-25 Tryout Information


We are looking for athletic and spirited males and females to add to our cheer program. Being a member of The University of Toledo Cheer Team provides individuals with the opportunities and privileges only available to student-athletes.

The Toledo football team defeated Kent State, 52-31, at the Glass Bowl on Oct. 15, 2022.

IMPORTANT DATES:

 

  • April 16 l 6:30-8:30 p.m. : Optional open gym
  • April 18 l 6:30-9:00 p.m. : Open Gym, material will be taught at this open gym for tryouts.
  • April 19 l 5:00-9:00 p.m. : Tryouts
    • Skills that will be judged:
      • Chant
      • Standing Tumbling
      • Running Tumbling
  • April 20 l 10:00-5:00 p.m. : Tryouts
    • Skills that will be judged:
      • Fight Song
      • Partner Stunting Skills

DOCUMENTS TO BE SUMBITTED:

  • Letter of Acceptance to UToledo (please include Rocket ID number)
  • Letter of Recommendation from current or former coach, teacher, or school administrator.
  • Photocopy (front and back) of current health insurance card

TRYOUT INFORMATION: 

Below is a list of minimum skill requirements that we will be evaluating at tryouts. We want to see participants displaying these skills and expanding on them to help our program advance.
 

TUMBLING: 

  • Females:
    • Standing Tumbling (Performed on basketball court with pom poms):
      Back Tuck, Back Handspring Back Tuck, Cartwheel Tuck,
    • Running Tumbling (on mat):
      Round off Back Handspring Layout
      Elite pass of choice

 

  • Males: If comfortable, males can choose to perform the tumbling skills listed below:
    • Standing Tumbling (Performed on court or mat): Back Tuck (with a spot is okay), Most elite
      pass of choice (without a spot)
    • Running Tumbling: Most elite pass of choice (without a spot)

*Performed on a mat with a spotter. Must be done with a minimum of two (2) different partners. Please note we are looking for proper technique, cleanliness of the skill and variety of skills.*
 

  • Females
    • Single leg stunt with a full dismount
    • Walk in skill
    • Optional Flipping or Spinning Skill
       
  • Males
    • Toss skill
    • Walk in
    • Optional Flipping or Spinning skill
  • Sideline Chant:
    • A new sideline chant will be taught at the Tryout Open Clinics on April 18th. Females will be judged on motion sharpness and technique, voice/crowd leading ability, and overall gameday
      appeal. Males will be judged on meg work, voice/crowd leading ability, and overall game day appeal.
  • Fight Song:
    • Our UToledo fight song will be taught at the Tryout Prep Open Clinics. Males and Females will be judged on motion sharpness and technique, knowledge of material, crowd/leading ability,
      and overall game day appeal. The Fight Song contains a partner stunt (toss extension) and a standing back tuck. The fight song music will go through it two times; the first time, participants
      will do motions with a tuck at the end. The second time through participants will do spirit and rally with the dummy motions and end the fight song with a toss extension.

  • Females: Wearing athletic form fitting clothing such as a fitted tshirt/tank top/sports bra and
    shorts/spandex. Hair should be brushed and done out of the face with a bow in a low ponytail or
    half up half down style. Make up should be done (full face, neutral eyeshadows, red lipstick).
    Wear cheer shoes/tennis shoes to stunt in. **NO JEWELRY**
  • Males: Wearing athletic clothing and tennis shoes. Hair must be brushed and facial hair tamed.
    **NO WATCHES OR JEWELRY**
  • Team members are expected to present themselves in a positive and professional manner at all
    times through how they look and how they act.

TEAM INFORMATION:

  • The Toledo Cheerleading Squad will consist of 28-30 males and females (14 couples). 
  • Cheerleader will cheer at home and away football games, select home volleyball games, home men’s basketball games, and home women’s basketball games. All team events are mandatory! Please consider the time commitment associated with joining the University of Toledo cheerleading squad before trying out. 
  • Practice is a minimum of two (2) times a week (Tuesdays, and Thursday evenings) in addition to the games/competition listed above. 
  • There are also additional appearance and volunteer opportunities that will be added. 

 

You must be able to honor this time commitment to remain on the squad. With most events taking place in the evenings, you are encouraged to schedule your classes in the mornings to be completed by early afternoon to keep your evenings free.

  • Cheerleaders must be a full time student (12 credit hours per semester).
  • 1st year members must earn a minimum requirement of a 2.5 GPA.
  • Returning squad members must earn a minimum requirement of a 2.0 GPA.
  • Free NIKE gear
  • Travel with Toledo Football (Away games and bowl game appearances)
  • Postseason Basketball (MAC Tournament, NIT/WNIT, NCAA)
  • Priority Class Registration
  • Preventative and Post-Injury Care with Toledo Sports Medicine.
  • Mental Health Services, Evaluations, and Follow Ups.

REGISTER FOR TRYOUT

Announcement of Team:


Individuals will receive an email by Monday, April 22 informing them if they made the team or not. The judges' scoring sheets and comments will be sent to individuals upon request. Please text coach Maddy Driscoll at 513.578.3562 by Saturday, April 27 if you will be accepting your position on the squad. Once you have been accepted on to the team and confirmed your commitment to the program you will added to the band app which will have the summer practice schedule and information.
