Post-Game Notes
With tonight’s victory, the Rockets improve to 22-2 all-time vs. schools from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) since Division I institutions were split into two divisions in 1978.
After spotting Maine a 3-0 lead, Toledo reeled off 45 consecutive points to tally the decisive 42-point home victory.
With tonight’s effort, UT has now scored at least 30 points in five-consecutive games, dating back to last season.
The Rockets finished with a commanding 516-235 edge in total offense. UT posted 187 yards rushing and 329 yards passing. Through two games this season, Toledo has accumulated 1,072 yards of total offense, while its opposition has mustered only 501.
Toledo held a commanding 281-yard advantage in total offense despite running seven fewer plays (67-60) than Maine in tonight’s non-conference match-up. The Rockets averaged a whopping 8.6 yards per play, while the Black Bears were limited to 3.5. UT had three scoring plays that covered at least 64 yards and two that went for at least 85.
The Rockets were an efficient 8-of-15 (53.3 percent) on third-down conversions. Through two contests in 2016, Toledo has converted an impressive 20-of-32 (62.5 percent) third-down attempts.
Toledo limited Maine QB Dan Collins to 9-of-25 passing for a mere 65 yards. Collins was credited with 269 yards passing against Connecticut last Thursday. The Rockets finished with 13-0 advantage in tackles for loss. Ten different Rockets were credited with a tackle for loss, including a team-high two each by senior DE John Stepec and junior LB Ju’Wuan Woodley.
Junior QB Logan Woodside completed 13-of-25 passes for 329 yards and four touchdowns. Woodside completed passes to eight different players. The signal caller has now topped 300 yards in both games this season and on five occasions in his collegiate career. Through two games in 2016, Woodside has totaled 640 yards and seven scores.
Senior WR Corey Jones caught a team-tying best three passes for a game-high 100 yards, including a career-long 85-yard TD reception on the opening drive. Jones’ previous best effort was 69 yards against Northern Illinois on Nov. 11, 2014. Jones also eclipsed the century mark for the fifth time in his collegiate career and first since 2014 at NIU.
Junior WR Cody Thompson finished with two receptions for 85 yards, including a 64-yard TD catch in the second quarter. Thompson has now reeled in a TD catch in each of the last three games, dating back to last season. The Huron, OH native was also credited with a blocked punt in the third quarter, which resulted in a 27-yard return for a score by freshman S Ronnie Jones.
Freshman S Ronnie Jones scooped up a blocked punt in the third period and returned it 27 yards for a score. The last time the Rockets blocked a punt that was returned for a score occurred against Western Michigan on Nov. 6, 2001. Jehu Anderson was credited with a blocked punt against the Broncos and Corey Morris returned it for a touchdown.
Sophomore WR Jon’Vea Johnson was credited with a career-long 89-yard TD reception in the third quarter. Johnson’s previous best effort was 18 yards against Central Michigan on Nov. 10, 2015.
Redshirt freshman RB Art Thompkins scored his first collegiate touchdown on a two-yard run in the fourth period. Thompkins finished with five carries for 61 yards, averaging a whopping 12.2 yards per rush.
Senior TE Mike Roberts caught a team-tying best three passes for 34 yards, including a 21-yard TD reception in the third quarter. Roberts has now reeled in a TD reception in each of the first two games this season.
The Rockets opened the game with a three-play, 86-yard drive, culminating in an 85-yard TD pass from junior QB Logan Woodside to senior WR Corey Jones.
Senior DE John Stepec finished with six stops, including a pair of tackles for loss and one quarterback sack. Stepec was also credited with a quarterback hurry.
Sophomore PK Jameson Vest booted a 31-yard field goal in the second quarter. Vest has now converted a field goal in each of the first two games this season.
Senior P Nick Ellis averaged an impressive 43.3 yards per punt on three attempts, including a contest-best 50-yard effort. He is averaging 45.2 yards per punt this season.
Junior LB Ju’Wuan Woodley led the Rockets with eight stops, including a squad-tying best two tackles for loss.
Senior LB Jeremi Powell posted seven stops, including one tackle for loss.
