Post-Game Notes
UT wrapped up its 2016 home campaign with a 5-1 mark. The Rockets are 28-8 in the Glass Bowl since the start of the 2011 season.
Toledo claimed its third-straight victory over the Cardinals. UT now leads the all-time series against its MAC West Division rival 22-19-1.
The Rockets finished with 504 yards of total offense (325 passing, 179 rushing). UT has now totaled at least 500 yards on eight occasions this season. Toledo averaged a whopping 7.1 yards per play.
Junior QB Logan Woodside finished 25-of-39 passing for 325 yards and three touchdowns. Woodside, who completed passes to eight different receivers, has now thrown at least three TD passes in every game this season. With tonight’s effort, he surpassed Bruce Gradkowski (3,518 in 2004) for the top spot in UT annals for passing yards in a season with 3,653.
Senior WR Corey Jones returned a punt 63 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter, marking UT’s first punt return for a score since Bernard Reedy struck paydirt from 66 yards out against Central Michigan on Oct. 6, 2012. Jones finished the game with four receptions for 63 yards. He has now caught a pass in 36 straight games.
Senior RB Kareem Hunt carried the ball 17 times for 107 yards, topping the century mark for the 26th time in his collegiate career, one behind the school record set by Chester Taylor (1998-2001). Hunt was also credited with a career-tying best six catches for 98 yards, including a career-best 71-yard TD reception on UT’s first possession of the second half.
Sophomore WR Jon’Vea Johnson hauled in a 28-yard TD pass on UT’s opening drive. Johnson now has 10 TD receptions on the season, tied for third-most in school history in a single season with junior WR Cody Thompson and Eric Page (2011). Lance Moore holds the Toledo record with 14 receiving scores during the 2004 campaign. Johnson wrapped up tonight’s home finale with four catches for 51 yards. Â
Sophomore PK Jameson Vest was a perfect 3-of-3 on field-goal attempts, converting from 28 yards in the first quarter, 37 yards on the final play of the opening half and a career-long 49 yards in the third. Vest, who tied his career high for field goals in a game, has successfully converted eight straight kicks and has recorded multiple field goals on three occasions this season.
Junior WR Cody Thompson reeled in a team-tying best six receptions for a contest-high 105 yards, including a 42-yard TD reception in the third period. Thompson now has 10 TD catches on the year, tied for third-most in school history in a single season with sophomore WR Jon’Vea Johnson and Eric Page (2011). He also topped the century mark for the sixth time this year and has 1,126 receiving yards, the sixth-highest total in a single season in school history. Lance Moore holds the record with 1,194 receiving yards set during the 2003 campaign.
Senior DE John Stepec totaled a career-high nine stops, including 0.5 tackles for loss. Stepec was also credited with a contest-best two quarterback hurries and one pass breakup. His previous best effort was eight tackles at Arkansas State in the season opener on Sept. 2.
Senior STAR Jeremi Powell made his first start of the year and totaled a season-high four tackles.
Junior LB Zach Quinn was credited with a fumble recovery in the first quarter.
Junior TE Adam Kulon reeled in his first collegiate pass on the final play of the first period.
Toledo opened the game with an efficient eight-play, 93-yard drive that culminated with a 28-yard TD pass from junior QB Logan Woodside to sophomore WR Jon’Vea Johnson. UT has now scored a touchdown on its opening drive on three occasions this season (BYU on Sept. 30, Maine on Sept. 10).
