Joseph Scalzo was the wrestling coach at The University of Toledo for a period of 16 years (1950-1966). He coached five Mid-American Conference championship teams, 33 individual MAC championship wrestlers, and six wrestlers (Harry Lanzi, Dick Torio, Ed Lanzi, Don Wem, Dick Wilson, and Merrill Solowin) who won All-American honors. During his coaching tenure he achieved a record of 106-32-2. In 1956 he coached the United States Olympic wrestling team and in 1960 he became a United States Olympic wrestling official. Long active in the National Amateur Athletic Union, he became its national president in 1975.
