Frank Maher, Football/Track(1937-39)

Francis Maher lettered in football in 1937-39 as a fullback and also starred in track in long jump and the 100 yard dash man. The University yearbook, The Blockhouse, described Francis at the time as "a fast driving fullback" and the star of the 1937, 1938, and 1940 Rocket teams. Those Toledo teams put together records of 6-3, 6-3-1, and 7-3 only four spots separated Mr. Maher's 1939 team from an undefeated season. Francis was also an outstanding member of the Rocket Track teams, again quoting The Blockhouse; he was "a speedy broad jump and hundred yard dash man."Â He was named the most valuable player ever to compete in the National Football League in 1939, playing with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the old Cleveland Rams before World War II and military service ended his career.
