Jim Nicholson became UT's first full-time football coach in April, 1930, when the present campus was under construction. He upgraded the schedule and began the first recruiting program for players at UT. He gradually built the program to a point of strength where in his final season, 1935, the Rockets finished 6-2-1 and included a 63-0 drubbing of arch rival said UT was "becoming too strong" for further competition in 1937. After his retirement as coach, he helped organize the first Varsity "T" Club. He later became one of the leading industrialist and civic leaders in the City of Toledo. Mr. Nicholson died May 8, 1983.
