Tim Hirt, Golf (1978-81)
Tim Hirt considered by many to be the greatest golfer in MAC history. He is the only golfer to win three conference championships (1979-81). While with the Rockets, he was a two-time All-American and was one of the 24 invited to compete at the prestigious Sun Bowl invitational in 1980 where he finished eighth among the nation's best, even without the benefit of outdoor practice before the tournament. That same year, he finished 20th out of 160 in the NCAA tournament. He taught himself the game of golf through imitation and never had a lesson until he was 19 years old. Yet, at the age 18, he became the first golfer to win both the Toledo District Golf Association (TDGA) junior championship and the TDGA junior championship and the TDGA adult championship in the same season. Following graduation, he joined UT golf Coach Don Kotnik at the Toledo Country Club as an assistant pro. In 1986 he became head professional at Glengarry Country Club. Prior to that he was in Houston as the No. 1 assistant at River Oaks.
