Bob Gerber
One of the most outstanding players in University of Toledo basketball history, Bob Gerber lettered during the 1940, 1941, and 1942 seasons and is the only UT player named to the All-American team twice (1941 and 1942). In 1942, he scored 532 points, setting a national scoring record, which included all collegiate players competing on teams which played a major basketball schedule (against seven major opponents). In 1941, he was voted All-Western in the Herald-American Honor Cage selections and second-team All-American in Collyer's All-American Cage selections. In the 1941-42 season, he captured the UT squad and was also voted the "best basketball player in the United States" by many national publications. He was selected as an All-American by the Chicago Tribune, New York Sports Writers Association, and Converse in 1941 and 1942. He led Toledo in scoring all three of his varsity seasons with an average of 14.4, 17.8, and 20.5 points per game, while playing for teams that posted a combined record 68-14 during his three years. In the 1942 National Invitational Tournament, he set Madison Square Garden college records with 17 field goals and 37 in three games. During that year, he played in the Nation's Cage Aces All-Star Classic and made the PIC Magazine All-America Basketball Team. He ranks ninth in the Rockets' 1,000-Point Club with 1,319 career points in 75 games. He scored 359 points in 1940, 428 in 1941 and 532 in 1942. His 17.6 career scoring average ranks sixth among all former UT greats. One publication shows that Gerber averaged 15.7 rebounds per game throughout his 1936-42 career but UT record can neither prove nor disprove this statistic (Note: additional record he may have established are not listed because most other statistical categories were not kept).
