A Toledo High School standout at St. Francis de Sales, Paul Peer earned three letters in baseball from 1980-1982. Though cutting his career short by opting to join the New York Yankees after his junior season, Peer career mark still ranks near the top of almost every offensive category. His 105 career RBIs tie him for second on the all-time list, while he is third in both total bases (280) and home runs (23). During his years with the Rockets, Peer was both a consistent and powerful offensive threat, leading the team in total bases and home runs in each of his three seasons. As a first-team All-MAC selection in 1981, Peer led the Rockets in several categories that season including runs (50), hits (60) and doubles (16). Many of the marks he posted during that campaign remain near the top of the UT record book. Rockets skipper Stan Sanders called Peer "the most mature player I have coached at UT," praising an important aspect of the game which he statistics fail to measure. Though originally intending to attend UT on a football scholarship, Peer's chance of heart yielding an indelible mark on the Rocket baseball program. In the Yankees system, Peer was named Player of the Week in 1983 with their minor league team in Painstville. After leaving baseball, he began working for Sofo Foods where he is now a regional sales manager. Married for 12 years, he and wife Linda have two daughters, Sandra (12) and Megan (1). Peer was inducted in to the St. Francis Hall of Fame in November, 1993.
