Toledo offensive lineman has served in two overseas mission trips
TOLEDO, Ohio — University of Toledo redshirt freshman offensive lineman Matt Hofer has been nominated for the 2025 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and named to the 2025 Wuerffel Award watch list.
For the second year, Allstate is partnering with the Wuerffel Foundation to align two of college football's most meaningful honors: the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team and the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy. Together, they recognize student-athletes who demonstrate excellence in community service, academics and athletics.
A Valparaiso, Ind. native, Hofer has made mission trips to Kenya in 2024 and to the Philippines in 2025. In Kenya, he engaged with schools and orphanages, teaching, playing games, and sharing hope with vulnerable children, including trafficked girls. In the Philippines, he assisted churches with vacation bible school, supported fundraising efforts for a college, and prepared housing for incoming mission teams.
Back in Toledo, Hofer has volunteered at numerous area organizations, including Cherry Street Mission, Toledo Boys & Girls Club, Cornerstone Church, Gleaners Community Food Bank, among many others. He has also shared his time at numerous area elementary schools.
Established in 1992, the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team recognizes college football athletes for their unwavering commitment to community service and their "good works" off the field. This year's 197 nominees champion causes including mental health awareness, youth mentorship, hunger relief, domestic abuse prevention, and many more. In addition to being actively involved with a charitable organization or service group, each player must also maintain strong academic standing to be considered for a spot on the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team.
The final roster of 23 award recipients announced in September. All members are selected by a voting panel of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members, current and former head coaches and journalists who look for exceptional leadership on and off the football field.
Widely regarded as college football's premier award for community service, the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy celebrates student-athletes who use their platforms to serve others and create positive change. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winner and University of Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel, who turned his football success into a lifelong mission of service, the award reflects his legacy of leadership and humanitarianism.Â
The winner of the Allstate Wuerffel Trophy will be announced at the Home Depot College Football Awards show on Dec. 12 on ESPN and will be presented on Jan. 31, 2026 at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Ga.
