CLEVELAND, Ohio – Toledo baseball student-athletes
Jacob Tabor,
Brady Sasse and
Caden Konczak have each earned All-MAC honors, with Sasse also claiming a major award as MAC Freshman Pitcher of the Year, the Mid-American Conference announced on Tuesday.
Â
Tabor was named First-Team All-MAC, picking up an all-conference selection for the second-straight year, while Sasse and Konczak each claimed second-team selections, their first of their careers.
Â
After being named Second-Team All-MAC as a freshman, Tabor put together a stellar sophomore season as a starter, with a 3.35 ERA in 52.1 innings pitched, a .239 opponent average and 41 strikeouts to 22 walks. He dominated in conference play, with a 1.41 ERA, a .199 opponent batting average and 25 strikeouts. He pitched 11.0 scoreless innings over his final two outings against Northern Illinois and Central Michigan.
Â
After entering the rotation, Sasse put together a strong season in 13 appearances and 10 starts, with a 3.68 ERA, a .236 opponent average and 40 strikeouts to 15 walks in 51.1 innings pitched. He had a 3.31 ERA, a .225 opponent average and 28 strikeouts to just six walks against MAC opponents. Sasse pitched five shutout innings on three hits against Akron (April 6) and pushed Toledo to a series victory against Bowling Green with just two hits allowed and one run (May 3). He struck out six batters in four different appearances.
Â
Sasse's selection marks the second major conference pitching award in program history. He is the first to win a major pitching award since Jeremy Griffith took MAC Pitcher of the Year in 1999.
Â
Konczak, a team captain, hit .307 in the regular season with a team-leading 10 home runs, 31 RBIs, 42 runs scored, 63 hits, 29 walks and 12 hit-by-pitches for a .418 on-base percentage, adding 10 stolen bases. He also hit .328 against MAC pitching with five home runs and 10 doubles. The senior delivered the game-winning three-run home run against East Tennessee State (April 26). He had three four-hit games in the month of May, including a 4-for-6 effort with three doubles and three runs scored against Central Michigan (May 16).
Â
The trio helped the Rockets (28-27, 17-13 MAC) to the No. 5 seed in the MAC Tournament, with Toledo making a second-consecutive appearance in Avon. Toledo will open the tournament in a Battle of I-75 matchup against No. 4 seed Bowling Green on Wednesday, May 21 at 6:00 p.m. from Crushers Stadium. Toledo took 2-of-3 games at home against the Falcons during the regular-season series.
