Rockets relax at afternoon beach party following practice
BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Toledo Rockets held their first practice on Saturday morning at Boca Raton High School in preparation for the Bush's Boca Raton Bowl of Beans.
Toledo (8-4, 6-2 MAC) will face Louisville (8-4, 4-4 ACC) Â at FAU's Flagler Credit Union Stadium in Boca Raton, Fla. on Tuesday, Dec. 23 at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN.
Interim Head Coach Robert Weiner said he was impressed by the effort at today's practice.
"I give today's practice an A," said Weiner. "Two days ago, we had a practice where I feel like the guys were just tired of practicing for Louisville. It was like, 'We've done that for two weeks now.' So we had kind of a little lower energy. And today, it was like clockwork, like we knew what we needed to do. Guys moved to the spots where they needed to move. So overall, I was really, really pleased."
Weiner said the Florida heat (Saturday's high was 81 degrees) did not pose a problem for his team, which played its final four games of the season in November in temperatures in the 30's and 40's.
"The transition to the heat is no problem," said Weiner, who served as the head football coach at Plant High School in Tampa for 16 years before joining the Rockets in 2020. "I told the team that back in my day when we would play in 95 degree heat in July that it's all a mindset of 'Bring on more!' Like Lieutenant Dan in Forrest Gump said, 'Is that all you got?' We're in the mindset to stay in the fight, no matter what. The fight is all around. The fight is the other team. The fight is being our best self. Stay in the fight. Don't let variables we can't control take anything away from that."
After practice, the Rockets enjoyed a beach party at nearby Lake Worth Pier where they had a chance to swim, fish and relax on the beach.
Toledo will have two more practices leading up to Tuesday's contest vs. the Cardinals.
On Sunday, the Rockets will enjoy another afternoon at the beach. In addition, selected players will visit Baptist Health Boca Raton Regional Hospital. The bowl kickoff luncheon is on Monday, followed by a joint team press conference.
