WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – The Toledo men's golf team moved up three spots in the standings on Monday to finish in fifth place at the Purdue Fall Invitational. The Rockets shot an even-par 288 for the second-straight round on the par-72, 7,461-yard
Kampen Course to finish at 11-over par in the 54-hole tournament.
"Our guys are starting to show potential and have the ability to get to the next level," Head Coach
Jeff Roope said. "We just have to make some small adjustments throughout an entire round to get where we want to go. We played well enough to get to 10-under yesterday and seven-under today but then ended up at even-par. It's just going to take us some time. We think we can compete at this level. We just need to prove it."
Junior
Mads Jensen topped Toledo today with a two-under par 70 to tie for a career-best seventh place finish. His two-under par 214 for the tournament clinched his first top-10 finish as a Rocket.
"Mads played really well and is on the verge of breaking through," Roope said. "He was six-under through nine holes yesterday but then gave some back. That's the type of thing I think you need to go through in order to understand what it feels like to be in that position."
Freshman
Julius Lange (81-72-72) registered the Rockets' second-best round today with an even-par 72 to finish tied for 44
th place along with junior
Bence Kotel (78-74-73) at nine-over 225.
Sophomore
Marijn Hoogeveen (73-74-73=220) and senior
CJ van Wyk (73-73-75=221) tied for 28
th and 32
nd place, respectively.
Indiana captured the tournament title at 14-under par, with Miami's Michael Weber earning medalist honors at eight-under par.
Three Rockets also competed in the Purdue Fall Individual Tournament at the par-71, 7,275-yard Ackerman-Allen Golf Course. Freshman Bence
Bertenyi topped the 34-player field with a seven-under 206 (67-69-70) and led the way in par-four scoring at five-under par. He committed just two bogeys and led the field with 43 pars. Also competing in the tournament were sophomore
Mason Deal (T-13
th/218) and senior
Jamie Butler (T-20
th/220).
Toledo will be back in action in two weeks when it travels to Lexington, Ky. for Kentucky's Cullan Brown Collegiate on Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 7-8.
