TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo Athletic Department has placed first in the Mid-American Conference and second in the nation in the Excellence in Management Cup for the 2022-23 Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) athletic season. The EM Cup has been awarded on 10 occasions and was created by the Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics (LSIA) at Texas A&M University, which annually reviews the most economically efficient athletic departments in the FBS.

The scoring system awards the most points to athletic departments that win conference and national championships, while efficiently allocating money to win the titles. The purpose of the EM Cup is to bring awareness to NCAA athletic departments that are maximizing fiscal resources while achieving athletic success.

Because athletic departments across the country differ from one another in size, economic strength and number of opportunities to win championships, the EM Cup results are calculated using a formula that evens the playing field.

The 2022-23 results represent Toledo's all-time highest finish in the EM Cup. Over the last two years, no FBS program in the country has won more regular season conference games in football, men's basketball, and women's basketball than the Rockets.

"I'm very proud of our department for earning yet another accolade recognizing our unprecedented success," said Bryan B. Blair, Vice President and Director of Athletics. "The EM Cup showcases those who generate the most success from the resources provided and is a true testament to our amazing coaches, student-athletes, and staff. The most exciting aspect is that we have even more potential moving forward, and we're excited to bring that vision to fruition with our community and University stakeholders."

In 2022-23, Toledo set a school record by winning six MAC titles. The Rockets won MAC Championships in men's basketball, women's basketball, women's cross country, football, men's tennis, and women's tennis. UT was also the first school in FBS history to win a conference championship in these sports in the same season, and the third school in FBS history to win a conference championship in football, men's basketball, and women's basketball in the same season (Ohio State and Oregon were the other two). In addition, the Rockets accumulated six MAC Player of the Year and five MAC Coach of the Year honors.

This year, Toledo earned the MAC's Jacoby Trophy and Reese Trophy in the same season for the first time ever. It marked the third consecutive season the Rockets have won the Reese Trophy. The trophies are awarded to the conference's top women's and men's athletic programs each year. The Rockets won MAC titles in the sports of men's basketball, women's basketball, women's cross country, men's tennis and women's tennis and finished as the runner-up in men's cross country, football and women's golf.
