Toledo Ends MAC Tournament with 4-3 Defeat to Ball State

Rockets' postseason run comes to end vs. Cardinals

AVON, Ohio – The No. 6 seed Toledo baseball team came up a run short, falling in a 4-3 decision to No. 3 Ball State in the Mid-American Conference Tournament at Crushers Stadium on Friday.

The Rockets (27-32) had the tying run cut down at the plate in the eighth inning, as the Cardinals (34-22-1) held on for the victory. A three-run homer by the Cardinals in the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie and proved to be the difference. Toledo finished with a 2-2 record in the MAC Championship, winning at least two games in the tournament for the first time since 2013.

"It always hurts when it ends, but I can't express how proud I am of this team," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "They battled and fought incredibly hard. We took care of Miami this morning and competed all the way until the last out against Ball State this afternoon."

Toledo received two hits each from juniors Caden Konczak, Garret Pike, and Trey Wright. Wright had two RBIs on the afternoon while freshman JP Wagner supplied the other. Konczak, Pike, and freshman Luke Walton each scored a run this afternoon.

Junior Brennan McCune received his first start on the mound this season, pitching 3.2 innings, allowing one run on three hits and striking out three. Toledo then used five pitchers out of the bullpen, with senior Camryn Szynski going the furthest with 1.2 innings of scoreless relief on one hit and three strikeouts. Senior Kyle Music (1-1) took the decision, giving up three earned runs in 1.1 innings.

Reinstetle expressed gratitude for the senior class who played their final games for Toledo.

"I'm so thankful for this senior class that will be exiting the program," Reinstetle said. "They are leaving the program in a better place than when they got here, and that's all you can ever ask for. We'll be back next year, and the foundation has been laid to win the MAC Tournament and take the program to new heights. Go Rockets!"

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Rockets got on the board in the top of the fourth off a two-out RBI single by Trey Wright.
