TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team is headed back to the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championship this Friday, May 3 as it takes the court vs. Illinois at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center in Lexington, Ky.
The match will be followed by the DePaul and #5 Kentucky match at 4:00 p.m. The winners will play in the second round on Saturday, May 4 at 4:00 p.m. General admission is $15, while children ages 3-8 and seniors 65 years and older will have discounted tickets for $10, and children under the age of two are admitted free. Friday's tickets are good for both matches.
Last Time on the Court
Toledo (14-10) won its second consecutive Mid-American Conference Tournament title, the ninth total in program history, on April 21. The Rockets faced regular-season champion Western Michigan in the finals for the third straight year and took down the Broncos in an exciting 4-1 victory on their home court. 2024 MAC Player of the YearÂ
Pawit Sornlaksup clinched match point from the top court to punch the Rockets' ticket into the NCAA postseason dance. Sornlaksup was named MAC Tournament MVP, MAC All-Tournament Team, and First-Team All-MAC. Senior
Marko Galic joined Sornlaksup as a First-Team selection, while junior
Hanamichi Carvajal joined Sornlaksup on the MAC All-Tournament Team and was picked Second-Team All-MAC.
NCAA First and Second Round
- This is Toledo's second straight appearance in the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. The Rockets fell to #7 Michigan 4-0 last season in Ann Arbor.
- Sornlaksup also was recently announced as an automatic qualifier (15) to compete in the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships on May 20-25 at the Greenwood Tennis Center in Stillwater, Okla. The 64 singles players selected and 32 doubles teams will compete on the campus of Oklahoma State University, which is hosting the team championships on May 16-19.
- Friday's match will be the second match between Toledo and Illinois this year, and sixth in history. The Rockets lost to the Fighting Illini 4-0 on Jan. 20.
- Toledo is 3-11 against DePaul, and last played the Blue Devils on Feb. 2, 2020.
- Toledo is 0-5 vs. Kentucky, and last faced the Wildcats on Jan.16, 2020.
About Illinois
Illinois (16-9) won six straight matches to end the regular season before falling to Nebraska, 4-2, in the first round of the 2024 Big Ten Tournament. Hunter Heck and Karlis Ozolins earned First-Team All-Big Ten honors, and Kenta Miyoshi was named Second-Team All-Big Ten. Heck and Ozolins were both named singles at-large selections (49) and together as a doubles team at-large selection (18) for the NCAA Division I Men's Tennis Championships. Ozolins (No.27), Heck (No. 42), and Miyoshi (No.99) are ranked among the top 125 singles players in the country. U of I's doubles team of Heck and Ozolins (No.9) and Lucas Horve with Oliver Okonkwo (No.44) are nationally ranked pairs.
Illinois is making its 27
th appearance at the NCAA Tournament and has been to the dance in 17 of the last 19 years under head coach Brad Dancer. The Illini won the 2023 National Championship title and was runner-up in 2007.
