Three Home Runs, Strong Pitching Effort Lifts Rockets to 5-2 Victory at Notre Dame

Toledo allows just four hits in series finale victory

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Toledo baseball team hit three home runs and combined four a four-hit pitching effort to grab the series finale 5-2 against Notre Dame at Frank Eck Stadium on Sunday.

After falling behind 1-0, the Rockets (25-27) scored five unanswered runs between the third and fifth innings to take the lead for good and avoid the sweep against the Irish (27-22). Toledo picked up its first win vs. an ACC opponent since April 15, 2015, when the Rockets defeated Notre Dame 5-0.

Offensively, Toledo got a two-run home run each from junior Garrett Pike and freshman JP Wagner, with junior Caden Konczak adding a solo shot. Konczak finished 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored, a walk and a stolen base. Pike's home run was his 20th of the season and fourth of the week, while Wagner hit his first career long ball.

For the second straight start, sophomore Jackson Bergman (W, 3-5) pitched his longest outing of the season, going 6.0 innings and allowing just one run, three hits and striking out two for the victory. Freshman Jacob Tabor (SV, 6) pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on one hit and striking out three. Toledo pitching reached its most strikeouts in a season as a team, with Tabor recording its 455th in the eighth inning.

"We played really well overall today," said Head Coach Rob Reinstetle. "Jackson Bergman was sensational to start and Jacob Tabor was equally as good to finish the game. We swung the bats well again today and made all of the runs count. I would have liked to win the series and we had a chance to win Friday's game, but we did what we needed and played good baseball this weekend."

The Rockets will play their home finale on Tuesday, May 14 in a matchup against Dayton beginning at 3:00 p.m. at Scott Park. Toledo will then finish the regular season and Mid-American Conference schedule against Bowling Green May 16-18.
