Late Runs Not Enough as Rockets Fall Short in Series Finale at Ohio

Toledo's rally ended with winning run at the plate

ATHENS, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team rallied late to score in the eighth and ninth innings, but the comeback bid fell short in a 5-3 defeat to Ohio at Bob Wren Stadium on Sunday.

The Rockets (20-24, 13-11 MAC) could not overcome a slow offensive start and a four-run deficit as the Bobcats (14-25, 9-15 MAC) took the rubber match of the series.

"It's disappointing to come out and hit the way we did today, after slugging it all over the yard yesterday," said Head Coach Rob Reinstetle. "We had chances to score and just didn't, especially in the fifth inning when we had second and third, nobody out and did not score. We pitched okay today, but disappointed with the offensive effort as a whole."

Senior Owen Jackson hit solo home runs in the fourth and eighth innings, his fourth multi-home run game of the season and giving him 13 on the year. He finished the series 3-for-8 with two home runs, five RBIs and a .615 on-base percentage. Junior Caden Konczak drove in Toledo's other run on the afternoon.

Sophomore Jackson Bergman (1-5) pitched 3+ innings, allowing three earned runs and striking out three. Senior Camryn Szynski pitched 3.0 scoreless innings on just one hit and freshman Jacob Tabor worked through 2.0 scoreless innings of his own, stranding four Ohio baserunners.

Toledo will play Bowling Green in a non-conference game on Tuesday, April 30th at 4:00 p.m. The Rockets will then return to Scott Park for a MAC weekend series May 3-5 against Eastern Michigan.

"We are still heavily in the mix to go to the MAC Tournament, but we need to get back to playing good baseball on a consistent basis again," said Reinstetle.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Ohio led off the bottom of the second with a triple and brought the runner home on a sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead.
  • Owen Jackson led off the fourth with a solo home run to center to tie the game.
  • Ohio put the first three hitters on to take a 2-1 lead in the fourth, then scored another run on a double play.
  • The Bobcats got a two-run home run in the seventh to push the lead to 5-1.
  • Jackson hit his second home run of the day in the eighth to cut the deficit to 5-2.
  • Caden Konczak singled with two outs in the ninth to drive home a run and bring the go-ahead run to the plate. However, the next batter struck out looking to end the game.
