Toledo Loses 4-3 Heartbreaker to Western Michigan in Rematch of Last Year's MAC Championship Final

Pawit Sornlaksup's two-year undefeated 22-match conference record comes to an end

TOLEDO, Ohio – In a rematch of last year's MAC Championship final, the Toledo men's tennis team fell to Western Michigan in a 4-3 decision at Shadow Valley Tennis Club on Sunday. The Rockets, who defeated the Broncos in Kalamazoo, Mich., last April for the 2023 conference crown, fought valiantly but in the end, the Broncos got a measure of revenge.

With the match tied 3-3, it came down to a decisive battle between senior Marko Galic and Benjamin George at the No. 2 court. Galic won the first set 6-3, but George won the close-out 6-4, 6-3 to clinch match point for the visitors. Galic fought off two match points in the third and final set before succumbing.

The match was a hard-fought battle all afternoon. After Western Michigan took the doubles point, junior Hanamichi Carvajal tied the match 1-1 from the No. 3 spot with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph. WMU took back the lead with its win from the No. 4 court, and Anton Arzhanikin came out on top in a back-and-forth match to defeat senior Pawit Sornlaksup to put the visitors at match point. Sonlaksup's singles defeat was his first ever in conference play, going back to March 2022, breaking a streak of 22 consecutive league victories.

Sophomore Matias Olivero lost his first set at the bottom court but came back to win the second and the tiebreaker sets to keep UT in the match. Freshman Poonthong Komolpisut held on for the three-set victory to tie the match at 3-3, setting up the decisive matchup on the No. 2 court.

Toledo (7-8, 2-1 MAC) will head to Chicago for its next two matches at UIC on March 22 and Northern Illinois on March 24.
