Toledo Heads to Oakland for Tuesday Contest

First pitch for Rockets and Golden Grizzlies set for 2:30 p.m.

5/8/2023 3:36:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team will look to keep things rolling on Tuesday when it visits non-conference opponent Oakland in midweek action.

Tuesday's game between the Rockets (23-24) and Golden Grizzlies (21-27) will begin at 2:30 p.m. and be streamed live on ESPN+.

This will be one of the last non-conference games of the season for Toledo with the final midweek contest coming at home next week vs. Purdue Fort Wayne.

Last Time Out
The Rockets swept Northern Illinois last weekend in DeKalb, capturing three big conference wins.

Toledo opened the weekend with a 5-2 extra-inning victory before defeating the Huskies 7-4 on Saturday. Sunday's game was the highest-scoring game of the series, a contest the Rockets won 18-12.

In three games against NIU, Toledo hit .350 and averaged 10.0 runs per contest. The Rockets showed off their power and speed all weekend long, tallying 11 extra-base hits and stealing 15 bases combined over three games. Jeron Williams (8-for-15, .533) and Mason Sykes (6-for-12, .500) both hit at least .500 during the series and Brayden White recorded a team-best seven RBIs.

Rewriting the Record Book
The last few weeks have seen several significant school records fall, and more records could fall in the final two weeks of the season:
  • Owen Jackson hit his 16th home run of the season in Sunday's game at Northern Illinois, which ties the school record for most home runs in a single season with teammate Mason Sykes, who hit 16 last year.
  • The week before in a non-conference game vs. Bowling Green, Sykes hit his 36th career home run to become Toledo's all-time home run leader. He passed Dan Sherwood (35 home runs, 2008-11) with his fourth-inning blast vs. the Falcons. Sykes' 37 career home runs are the most among all current MAC players.
  • Jeron Williams broke Toledo's single-season stolen base record on April 25 at Dayton and is threatening to break the MAC's single-season record as well. He has 46 stolen bases on the year, most in the nation and putting him just four stolen bases away from tying the all-time MAC single-season stolen base record of 50 set by Central Michigan's Larry Lamphere in 1988.
  • The Rockets have also broken their single-season team records for home runs and stolen bases. UT's 84 home runs clobbered the previous record of 65 homers set in 2002, and its 94 stolen bases overtook the single-season record of 85 set last season.
  • One of the top fielding teams in the country, Toledo's .980 fielding percentage this year ranks 13th in the nation and would be the highest in a single season in school history.
Battle of I-75 at Fifth Third Field: Part III
For the third straight year, the Toledo and Bowling Green baseball programs will face off at Fifth Third Field in Downtown Toledo. The Rockets and Falcons will play at the home of the Toledo Mud Hens on Friday, May 19 at 7:00 p.m.

Tickets are on sale now through the Toledo Mud Hens Ticket Office. Visit utrockets.com/FifthThirdField to purchase tickets.
Toledo and BGSU have each won one meeting at Fifth Third Field. The Rockets won the first game, 5-2, in 2021 before the Falcons won, 5-4, in 2022.

This year's Battle of I-75 matchup will be the second game in a three-game Mid-American Conference series between the two rivals. Toledo and Bowling Green will open their series at Scott Park on Thursday, May 18 and conclude on Saturday, May 20.

About Oakland
Oakland brings a 21-27 record into Tuesday's game and is coming off a series win at UW Milwaukee over the weekend. The Golden Grizzlies are familiar with Mid-American Conference competition, having posted a 2-6 record in eight games against MAC foes. Thomas Green is the team's top run producer, leading the squad in home runs (10) and RBIs (32).

Next Up
Following Tuesday's game at Oakland, the Rockets will return home to host Central Michigan this weekend in conference action.
