TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo Junior Pawit Sornlaksup has been named Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, as the conference office announced on Wednesday.Â
Sornlaksup, who was also named First-Team All-MAC for the second season in a row and second time in his career, was one of three Rockets to earn postseason distinctions from the MAC. Head coach Al Wermer was named Coach of the Year, a first for the program. Sornlaksup was joined by senior Krzysztof Wetoszka for first-team honors, while junior Adam Kovac was named Second-Team All MAC.
Sornlaksup is the second Rocket in program history to earn consecutive Player of the Year honors. Stjepan Sisko earned the honor three times, in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Sornlaksup, a Rayong, Thailand native, has been an unstoppable force since joining the Midnight Blue and Gold in 2022. He has won his last 43-straight singles matches on the No. 1 court, is 43-2 overall in his Rocket career and 22-0 in MAC play. He clinched the match point vs. Western Michigan on April 23 to secure UT's first MAC Tournament Championship title since 1973. Additionally, Sornalskup was named to the MAC All-Tournament team and was the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Sornlaksup was named MAC Singles Player of the Week on five occasions this season, earned one MAC Doubles Team of the Week honor with Wetoszka, and was named MAC Male Scholar Athlete of the Week on March 29 and April 26.
This is Wermer's first MAC Coach of the Year honor to go with his first regular-season and tournament championship titles. Wermer earned his 300th-career win at Toledo on Jan. 14 vs. Boston earlier this season, and now has 317 victories in his 26 years at the helm.
Wetoszka is now a three-time All-MAC honoree, earning second-team honors in 2021 and 2022. The Szczecin, Poland native had a 16-4, 9-2 MAC record this season, playing mostly from the No. 2 singles court, and had a career-high 10-match winning streak from Feb. 17-April 7. The senior added two MAC Singles Player of the Week honors and one Doubles Team of the Week accolade to his resume this season.
Kovac is a two-time second-team honoree and went 10-11, 6-6 MAC from the No 3 court this season. Kovac and doubles partner Marko Galic earned a 9-7 doubles record on the No. 2 court, including the doubles point clincher in the MAC Tournament semifinals vs. Buffalo and in the finals vs. Western Michigan.
The No. 73 ranked Toledo punched its ticket into the NCAA Tournament and will learn the identity of its first-round opponent at the NCAA selection show on Monday, May 1.Â
