Toledo Completes Series Sweep with 11-7 Victory at Middle Tennessee

Rockets slug season-high six home runs in the win

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Toledo baseball team completed a series sweep at Middle Tennessee on Sunday with an 11-7 victory.

Both teams combined for nine home runs on the day, with six coming off the bats of Rocket hitters. Toledo grabbed the lead in the top of the first and never looked back, tacking on three insurance runs late in the game to hold on for the win.

"I'm so proud of the way the guys fought today," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "Many people don't understand just how hard it is to sweep a weekend series in college baseball. Our guys came ready to play and Middle Tennessee gave us everything they had. Jeron Williams got us going quickly early but many of our hitters after him had big at-bats and kept adding to our lead. We pitched and hit well all weekend, which was great to see. Now we head to UT Martin for a couple midweek games for our last tune-up before MAC play. I like the way we are playing at moment and look to continue that this coming week."

Junior Jeron Williams hit two of Toledo's six homers, one of which was a grand slam. Senior Mason Sykes, junior Scott Mackiewicz, and sophomores Garret Pike and Owen Jackson all hit home runs on Sunday as well. Senior Daunte DeCello went 3-for-5 at the plate with a pair of doubles and Mackiewicz scored three times, more than any other player.

On the mound, junior Matt LeLito made his first start as a Rocket and threw 4.1 innings. Juniors Kyle Pijaszek and Camryn Szynski finished the final 4.2 innings, combining to strike out four and allowing just one run.

The Rockets' quick two-game series at UT Martin begins on Tuesday, March 7 at 4:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • Jeron Williams led off the game with a home run to give Toledo an early lead, and two batters later Owen Jackson launched a 2-2 pitch for a homer to put UT ahead 2-0 before the Blue Raiders had a chance to bat.
  • Williams extended the lead to 6-0 in the top of the second with a grand slam. Daunte DeCello reached on a one-out double, and Trey Wright and Scott Mackiewicz followed that up with an HBP and a walk to load the bases.
  • MTSU got on the board in the bottom of the second on a three-run home run by Gabe Jennings that halved the Rockets' lead, putting the score at 6-3.
  • Garret Pike's two-run home run in the top of the fourth pushed the lead back to five, 8-3.
  • JT Mabry answered with a two-run home run for Middle Tennessee in the bottom of the fourth to again make it a three-run ballgame, 8-5.
  • The Blue Raiders plated runs in the fifth and seventh to pull within a run, putting the score at 8-7.
  • Mackiewicz added a clutch insurance run with a solo homer in the top of the eighth, and Mason Sykes added to the lead with a two-run shot in the top of the ninth to help seal the win.
