Battle of I-75 Returns to Fifth Third Field on Tuesday Night

5/9/2022 2:49:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – Toledo and Bowling Green will resume the Battle of I-75 rivalry at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 7:00 p.m. on BCSN and the game will also be streamed live on ESPN+.

Tickets for Toledo's game at Fifth Third Field are on sale now and can be purchased through the Toledo Mud Hens ticket office online by visiting this link. General admission tickets will be $8.00, with discounted tickets available for high school and college students.

The Rockets (28-19, 19-13 MAC) and Falcons (15-30, 12-22 MAC) will be meeting out of conference play on Tuesday after playing a four-game Mid-American Conference series at Stellar Field this past weekend. Both teams came away with a pair of victories in the series split.

Last Time Out
Toledo and Bowling Green played a pair of doubleheaders this past weekend due to weather wiping out the single game on Friday. The Rockets won the first game of each twin bill, while the Falcons captured game two both days.

Kyle Jones was outstanding in game one on Saturday, throwing six innings and striking out six while allowing just one run and walking none. The 6-1 win was Toledo's 12th straight, which set a new school record for longest winning streak. That streak ended later in the day when Bowling Green won game two, 7-6.

The first game on Sunday was a low-scoring affair that Toledo won, 1-0. John Servello's fourth-inning home run proved to be the difference as Camryn Szynski, Patrick Dillon, and Cal McAninch combined to blank the Falcons in seven innings. BGSU would bounce back to win the second game, 7-1.

Rocket Notes
  • Kyle Jones has a chance to break the single-season strikeout record. He currently sits at 93 strikeouts, 10 away from surpassing the current record of 102 that was set in 1999 by Jeremy Griffiths.
  • Jones' 93 punchouts are the most in the MAC and rank 19th in the country. He also leads the MAC K/BB ratio (6.64) and innings pitched (75.2).
  • John Servello is making his way up a few career record lists at Toledo. His 245 career hits are sixth all-time and 17 away from breaking the all-time record of 261 (Joe Corfman, 2009-12). He also ranks in the top ten in career doubles (49), runs scored (145), walks (86), and total bases (359).
  •  Garret Pike has the highest batting average on the team (.343) and is leading the team in hitting in MAC play (.374).
  • Cal McAninch has not allowed a run since April 15 and has strung together six straight scoreless outings.
2021 at Fifth Third Field
Toledo defeated Bowling Green, 5-2, in front of more than 2,500 fans last year at Fifth Third Field.

The Falcons scored the first run of the game, but the Rockets answered with two in the bottom of the second and would not trail for the rest of the night. Bowling Green was not without scoring opportunities, leaving seven runners on base in the final three innings, failing to score in the ninth inning with the bases loaded and nobody out.

Toledo received gutsy pitching performances from Layne Schnitz-Paxton and Jordan Power. Schnitz-Paxton started the game and pitched six innings, striking out two while allowing two runs. Power came in with the bases loaded and no outs in the top of the seventh and allowed just one inherited runner to score, and stranded two runners in the eighth and three in the ninth to earn his second save of the year.

At the plate John Servello, Chris Meyers, and Zach Schwartzenberger all had two hits apiece. Both of Servello's hits went for extra bases, including a solo home run in the bottom of the fifth, his sixth of the year. Schwartzenberger drove in two runs, while Meyers and Marcus Strother both tallied an RBI to help the cause.
