Toledo Extends Winning Streak to 11 with 6-4 Victory Over Miami

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team extended its winning streak to 11 games on Wednesday with a 6-4 victory over Miami.

A four-run bottom of the sixth erased a 4-1 deficit for the Rockets (26-17, 17-11 MAC) and propelled them to their 11th straight win, which is tied for the longest winning streak in program history. The 2011 team also won 11 straight games from March 30-April 13 that season.

"We played another solid ballgame today," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "It all starts on the mound, and Connor Brandon was excellent today, probably the best he has thrown in a Rocket uniform. Cal McAninch and Kyle Jones both were equally as good in relief. The offense battled hard and found a way to respond when Miami scored. Trey Wright had a big day at the plate, but so many contributed to that four-run inning we put up in the sixth. That's an important series win over Miami. Now our focus shifts to a big five-game stretch against the team down I-75. We can't wait to get back on the diamond."

Toledo saw excellent performances on the mound and at the plate on Wednesday. Sophomore Connor Brandon got the start on the bump and was outstanding, striking out 10 in six innings. He struck out an astounding eight of nine batters at one point between the end of the third inning and the beginning of the sixth. Juniors Cal McAninch and Kyle Jones finished things off out of the bullpen, with McAninch tossing two shutout frames and Jones throwing a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Redshirt freshman Trey Wright led the way at the plate, driving in the go-ahead run in the sixth and an insurance run in the eighth to highlight a 3-for-3 day. Freshmen Garret Pike and Brian Fry as well as junior Mason Sykes all drove in runs to help the cause.

Next up for Toledo is a four-game series at arch-rival Bowling Green this weekend. Following that series will be the second annual iteration of the Battle of I-75 at Fifth Third Field on Tuesday, May 10.  Tickets for Toledo's game at Fifth Third Field are on sale now and can be purchased through the Toledo Mud Hens ticket office online by visiting this link. General admission tickets will be $8.00, with discounted tickets available for high school and college students.

How it Happened
  • Miami took an early lead on a one-out RBI single in the top of the second.
  • Fry tied the game at 1-1 with a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth.
  • Brandon was virtually unhittable in the middle innings; between the third out of the third inning and first out of the sixth inning he struck out eight of nine hitters.
  • Miami's Zach MacDonald broke that streak with a three-run home run to center field that put the RedHawks ahead, 4-1.
  • The Rockets didn't stay down for long, scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-4 lead. Pike drove in the first run of the inning on a base hit into right field, and Sykes followed that with an RBI double down the line in left field. Sykes scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, then two batters later Wright laced a line drive into center field to bring in the go-ahead run.
  • Though he allowed leadoff singles in the seventh and eighth, McAninch escaped both innings unscathed.
  • Wright's two-out single in the bottom of the eighth scored junior Darryn Davis and gave Toledo a 6-4 lead.
  • Jones made his first relief appearance of the season on Wednesday, pitching a scoreless top of the ninth to end the game and earn his first save of the year.
