TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team opened its weekend series against Ball State with an 8-1 loss at Scott Park on Friday.
It was a one-run game through five innings, but the Cardinals (15-8, 10-1 MAC) scored six runs over the final four innings while stifling the Rockets (12-12, 6-6 MAC) at the plate.
Freshman
Garret Pike tallied two of Toledo's four hits on Friday and now has three straight multi-hit games. Senior
John Servello tallied the lone RBI on the day with a bases-loaded walk in the third inning and reached base three times. He was one of two Rockets to record two walks, with junior
Mason Sykes also earning two free passes. Junior
Darryn Davis went 1-for-4 with a double.
Junior
Kyle Jones started on the mound and struck out five in 6.1 innings of work. Sophomore
Parker Newby pitched the final 2.2 innings, striking out two.
The Rockets and Cardinals will meet again on Saturday in a doubleheader beginning at noon.
How it Happened
- Jones faced the minimum through the first two innings, his only baserunner allowed being erased by a 6-4-3 double play that ended the top of the second.
- Servello led off the bottom of the second with a base hit, then stole second base to get into scoring position. He advanced to third on a ground ball to second base, but would advance no further.
- Ball State scored the first run of the game on an error in the top of the third to take a 1-0 lead.
- Toledo tied the score at 1-1 in the bottom half of the third. Sophomore Jeron Williams drew a one-out walk and stole second base, then Sykes was intentionally walked with two outs to put runners on first and second. Redshirt freshman Trey Wright also walked to load the bases with two outs, then Servello drew the fourth walk of the inning to bring in the tying run.
- The Cardinals took the lead in the top of the fifth with an RBI single by Zach Cole, making the score 2-1.
- Ball State continued to pile it on, scoring twice in the top of the sixth, twice in the seventh, and twice in the ninth to bring about the 8-1 final score.
