Toledo Heads to Western Michigan for Weekend Series

3/18/2022 1:36:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team continues MAC play this weekend with a four-game series at Western Michigan.

The series opener has been pushed back to Sunday due to rainy weather in Kalamazoo. The series between the Rockets and Broncos will now begin on Sunday with a doubleheader beginning at noon and will conclude with another noon doubleheader on Monday. Both twin bills will open with a seven-inning game and conclude with a nine-inning game.

Following this weekend's series will be Toledo's first home games of the 2022 season. UT hosts Miami for a four-game series next weekend, March 25-27, at Scott Park.

Last Time Out
The Rockets opened MAC play last weekend at Akron and split their four-game series with the Zips.

After dropping both games of a doubleheader last Friday, Toledo came back and swept the Monday doubleheader to come out of the weekend at 2-2.

On Monday, senior Jordan Power was outstanding in game one, throwing a career-best eight shutout innings while striking out seven and not allowing a walk. Sophomore Gavin Starcher earned his first save of the season out of the pen. At the plate, senior Zach Schwartzenberger tallied three hits and drove in one of four Rocket runs.

Game two saw more offensive production from both teams as the Rockets and Zips combined for 13 runs on 18 hits. Sophomore Jeron Williams went 3-for-6 with a pair of RBIs for UT to lead the way, while senior John Servello had a pair of hits, including his first home run of the season. Freshman Brian Fry had a nice day at the plate as well, going 1-for-2 with a couple RBIs and three walks. Sophomore Connor Brandon tossed five shutout innings and struck out six to start things off and junior Cal McAninch struck out two in 1.1 innings for the save.

Rocket Notes
  • Toledo's pitching staff sports a 3.96 ERA, the best in the MAC.
  • Two of the Rockets' starting pitchers have ERA's below 3.00: Kyle Jones (2.52) and Jordan Power (2.91). Connor Brandon's ERA sits at 3.00 exactly.
  • Power's eight shutout innings in the win at Akron marked the longest outing by a MAC pitcher this season and a career-high total for the Australia native.
  • Jones leads all MAC pitchers in innings pitched (25.0) and is one of two hurlers with three wins (Miami's Jonathan Brand).
  • Mason Sykes is one of the top offensive threats in the MAC, leading the league in RBIs (16) while sitting in a tie for third in home runs (four).
  • Jeron Williams is one of the toughest players to strike out in the MAC and in the country. The Archbold, Ohio native has struck out just four times in 60 at-bats, second-fewest among regulars in the MAC and 34th in the country.
