BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Toledo softball ended the Blazer Classic on Sunday with a 4-3 setback to North Dakota.
North Dakota took a one-run lead in the third inning on a fielder's choice, but Toledo answered with three runs in the fourth inning. Junior
Riley Mohr drove in the Rockets' tying run, 1-1, with a one-out double. Freshman
Kendra VanderLugt's singled to give Toledo a 2-1 advantage. Freshman
Sidney Griffith's single extended the Rockets' lead to 3-1.
The Fighting Hawks evened the score with two runs in the fifth and scored the game-winning run in the seventh on an error. Toledo's rally ended on three consecutive line drive outs in the seventh.
"We had a chance to bust the game open when we were up 3-1," head coach
Joe Abraham said. "We had people in scoring position and the heart of our lineup at the plate. Five minutes later it was 3-3. Then we dropped a routine fly ball with two outs in the seventh to give up the go-ahead run which proved to be the difference."
Toledo (3-7) will head down to Auburn, Ala. in two weeks to play five games at the Auburn Tournament on Friday-Sunday, March 5-6. The Rockets will face Chattanooga, North Carolina A&T, and host Auburn at Jane B. Moore Field.
