Toledo Rallies to Gain 3-2 Opening Day Victory at Belmont

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Toledo baseball team opened its 2022 season with a 3-2 come-from-behind victory at Belmont on Friday.

Trailing 2-1 in the top of the sixth inning, the Rockets scored a couple runs to flip the script and take a one-run lead over the Bruins. Sophomore Jeron Williams tied the game at 2-2 with an RBI ground out that scored senior Nicky Winterstein, and senior Matt Detering drove in the game-winning run three pitches later.

"I'm really proud of the team and how we played tonight," head coach Rob Reinstetle said. "It was a real team effort. The energy of all 30 guys was awesome. Kyle Jones pitched like a true ace and kept us in the game long enough for the offense to score. It doesn't show up in the stats, but we actually hit the ball really well tonight, just right at them. Camryn Szyinski was outstanding in relief getting the save. We also played really solid defense. Add that all up and you get a win. We need to come back tomorrow with the same focus, energy and keep playing good baseball."

Junior Kyle Jones got the nod to start on Opening Day and tied a career-high with 10 strikeouts through six innings of work. After giving up a couple runs in the first three innings, he stranded six Belmont runners over the next three frames, keeping UT in the game long enough for the offense to strike back. ophomore newcomer Camryn Szynski was excellent out of the bullpen, tossing three shutout innings while striking out two to earn the save.

Detering and Williams drive in Toledo's runs on Friday. Junior Mason Sykes had a pair of base hits and scored a run, while senior Nicky Winterstein and freshman Brian Fry both scored as well.

The Rockets and Bruins will meet again for a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 2:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • Belmont struck first when leadoff hitter Guy Lipscomb smacked a solo home run in the top of the first to make it 1-0.
  • Toledo tied the game in the top of the third on a double steal. With Fry on third base and sophomore Scott Mackiewicz on first, both runners took off and Fry was able to score to tie the game at 1-1.
  • The Bruins answered back in the bottom half of the third with an RBI double to make the score 2-1 and retake the lead.
  • In the top of the sixth, Williams grounded out to shortstop but Winterstein scored on the play to tie the game at 2-2. Detering then ripped a two-out single that brought home Sykes and gave the Rockets a 3-2 advantage.
  • Belmont nearly responded in the bottom of the sixth, but Jones got a strikeout to end the inning and leave two Bruins on first and second.
  • Szyinski did not allow a run over the final three innings, and he got some help from his defense in the bottom of the eighth. After a leadoff single, redshirt freshman Trey Wright threw out the runner trying to steal second to erase him from the basepaths. The next batter singled as well, but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double by the left fielder Winterstein.
  • Belmont's two-out single in the bottom of the ninth proved to be inconsequential, as Szyinski got the final batter of the game to pop out to Fry at second base.
