Rockets Conclude Spring Practice Season With Final Scrimmage

TOLEDO, Ohio - The Toledo Rockets concluded their 2021 spring football practice season with their final intrasquad scrimmage at the Glass Bowl on Friday. The 90-minute scrimmage was the last of 15 practices for the squad over the past month.
Head Coach Jason Candle said he was pleased with his team's progress.
"Overall, I like where we're at from an attitude and effort standpoint, from a fundamental standpoint of how things are progressing," said Candle, who is entering his sixth season as Toledo's head coach. "We got a lot of reps in for a lot of players. There are 20 to 30 more guys out there than we normally have in the spring due to the extra year of eligibility because of COVID."
The Rockets return all 22 position starters in 2021 as well as all of their top special teams players. Candle said the veteran nature of the team is a significant advantage from a coaching perspective.
"We've got a lot of guys coming back who have their undergraduate degree in their hand already. Guys who are older, more mature," said Candle. "They can handle being told what they didn't do well, and they take an educated approach on how to fix their mistakes. That always leads to a fun team to coach."
The Rockets will return to their off-season training regimen before resuming formal practices in fall camp in August. The 2021 season opens at home vs. Norfolk State on Sept. 4, followed by a trip to Notre Dame on Sept. 11.
