Three Rockets Battling for Quarterback Position

TOLEDO, Ohio – A spirited battle at the quarterback position has been going on since last spring for the Toledo Rockets, with at least three players vying to become the Rockets' main signal-caller in 2020.
Â
"The guy that wins that job is going to ultimately lead the team from a morale standpoint and from a production standpoint," Candle said. "I think it's the guy that consistently makes the best decisions, the guy that is most accurate with the football, and the guy who can lead guys when things don't go their way."
Â
Senior Eli Peters has started 10 games over the past two seasons, leading the Rockets to a 6-4 record in those contests. He has thrown for 2,665 yards and 25 touchdowns over the past two seasons while completing 56.2 percent of his passes. Last year, Peters appeared in five games, starting four, and threw for 828 yards and five TDs.
Â
Sophomore Carter Bradley started two games in 2019, throwing for 502 yards and one TD. He added a rushing touchdown in relief during the season opener at Kentucky. Bradley saw action in three games as a true freshman as well.
Â
Redshirt freshman Dequan Finn saw limited action in three games last year. He threw just 12 passes in his three brief appearances last season, but he proved to be a threat running the ball, totaling 90 yards on 15 carries.
Â
All three options bring different skillsets and experience levels to the table, though the latter might not have as much of an impact on the quarterback competition.
Â
"Whether you're talking about the quarterback or any position, I do not think already having experience should be a major piece in the coach's evaluation," Candle said. "It shouldn't give you a leg up as a player just because you've been through it. If I am the best player, I would expect my coaches to put me in the game, and I think that is true of the quarterback or any position."
