Toledo Toppled by Butler at Home, 8-3

Toledo, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team played its first home game at Scott Park in over three weeks on Wednesday, falling to Butler by a score of 8-3.

Butler led 6-0 at one point in the game, and the Rockets were unable to overcome the early deficit. Freshman Ryan Thompson was a bright spot at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs. Fellow freshman Darryn Davis also had two hits on the afternoon. Six pitchers saw time for Toledo, with senior Nate Haugh making his first career start.

Toledo hosts MAC foe Northern Illinois this weekend in its final home conference series of the season.

How it Happened
  • Butler took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second. Runners on first and second both advanced a base on a successful sacrifice bunt, then the runner at third scored on a ground ball to the second baseman.
  • The Bulldogs made it 3-0 with a two-run, two-out double into the gap in left-center field in the top of the fourth.
  • The top of the sixth saw more two-out damage from Butler. A bases-loaded ground ball allowed the runner at third to score, and a two-out double brought home two more runs and put the Rockets in a 6-0 hole.
  • Thompson's solo home run led off the bottom of the seventh and got Toledo on the scoreboard, putting the ledger at 6-1.
  • The Rockets made it 6-3 in the bottom of the eighth, again courtesy of Thompson. His two-run double to right field brought home Davis and sophomore Trace Hatfield and cut into the Bulldogs' lead.
  • Butler got those two runs back in the top of the ninth. A bases-loaded hit by pitch and RBI groundout did the damage and brought the score to 8-3, which would hold as the final.
