SIMPSONVILLE, Ky. - University of Toledo senior
Duncan McNeill is tied for 35
th place following Monday's first round of the 2019 NCAA Louisville Regional. The tournament is being hosted by the University of Louisville at the par-71, 7,217-yard University of Louisville Golf Club.
"The pins were tucked pretty good today which was much like he's seen in his last couple of events," Head Coach
Jeff Roope said. "He just found himself on the wrong side with a couple of approach shots early on and it cost him a shot or two. The shaft on his wedge broke under the grip on his second hole and slowed him down for a hole or two as well. Duncan's ball striking progressed all day and his lag putting was solid. He should be excited to get back on the course tomorrow."
McNeill concluded today's play with a round of two-over par 73, posting two birdies, four bogeys and 12 pars on the day. After playing the front nine at four-over par, McNeill birdied a pair of par-five holes, the 558-yard 13
th and 508-yard 17
th, on the back nine.
"The two par-fives on the back were very getable and I was able to take advantage of them," McNeill said. "I'll use my plan from today again tomorrow and just try and eliminate some unforced errors that I made today."
Louisville's Matthias Schmid sits atop the individual leaderboard with a five-under par 66, one stroke ahead of a quartet of golfers. A total of 15 golfers shot under par in the first round. No. 11 Auburn carded the best team score at eight-under par 276, two shots in front of No. 1 Oklahoma State and four ahead of No. 21 Louisville and No. 25 Baylor.
The field includes five Top 25 teams and 16 Top 100 players. The top five teams and the top individual not associated with those squads will advance to the 2019 NCAA Championships in Fayetteville, Ark.
McNeill is one of 75 players, comprised of 13 teams and 10 individuals, taking part in the three-round event. The second round will be held on Tuesday with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m.
