BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – Senior Saranlak Tumfong fired an even-par 72 in windy conditions for the Toledo women's golf team on Monday and is tied for first place following the first round of the Chippewa Invitational. The tournament is being held at the par-72, 5,966-yard Birmingham Country Club.
 
Tumfong opened her day with a birdie on the par-four, 268-yard sixth hole and was never over par the entire day. She notched two more birdies but a bogey on her final hole kept her from posting a score in the red.
 
"Sara showed a lot of mental toughness and determination today," Head Coach Jenny Coluccio said. "The wind picked up a lot during the round, and she never wavered from her plan. She created a lot of great opportunities for herself throughout the day."
 
The Rockets shot 25-over par 313 and sit in fifth place in the team standings. Western Michigan leads the 13-team field with a 12-over par 300.
 
Senior Thunpijja Sukkasem and freshman Amelia Lee are tied for 19^th place at six-over par 78. Rounding out the Rocket lineup are freshman Claudia Sampson (85/T-65^th) and senior Donchanok Toburint (87/T-69^th). Freshman Kathryn Roth is competing as an individual and is in 78^th place after carding a 91.
 
Tomorrow's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 10:00 a.m.
