Toledo, Ohio - The University of Toledo football team opened its 2018 preseason training camp with a pair of split-squad practices at the Glass Bowl on Friday, with half the team practicing early in the morning and the other half taking a session that lasted until noon. The defending Mid-American Conference champions will continue with the split practices over the weekend, and then begin full-team practices on Wednesday.
"It was a very productive first day," said head coach Jason Candle, whose team is coming off an 11-3 season. "It was a kind of like shock and awe as far as conditioning goes, as sometimes happens on the first day. We'll evaluate the video tape and grow from it. I'm looking forward to taking a look at it."
Candle's team returns 14 starters from last season's MAC Championship squad, including one of the best receiving corps in the nation. Senior wide receiver Cody Thompson, who returns for his fifth season following a season-ending injury in 2017, was a first-team All-MAC selection in 2016. He has caught 133 passes and 20 TD passes in his Rocket career. Junior Diontae Johnson was a first-team All-MAC choice in 2017, catching 72 passes for a school-record 1,257 yards and 13 scores. Senior Jon'Vea Johnson has caught 82 passes and 15 touchdowns over the past two seasons.
On defense, the Rockets return eight players with starting experience, including safeties Kahlil Robinson (67 tackles, four interceptions) and  Josh Teachey (56 tackles).
Toledo opens its season with a 7:00 p.m. game vs. VMI on Saturday, Sept. 1. Season tickets and single-game tickets are on sale now. Season tickets start at just $80. For more information, go online at UTRockets.com, call 419-530-GOLD (4653) or stop by the UT Athletic Ticket Office inside Savage Arena during business hours.
