TOLEDO, Ohio - Brad Pierson has been promoted to associate head athletic trainer and assistant director of sports medicine at the University of Toledo. In addition to Pierson's promotion, Mackenzie Haines and Alex Shoup have been added to the department as assistant athletic trainers.
"Brad has done a fantastic job for us and his promotion is well deserved," Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Brian Jones said. Â "He is hands down one of the best young professionals I have worked with in my 21 years at UT."
Pierson is in his sixth season on UT Sports Medicine staff and works directly with the women's basketball program. He also oversees the graduate assistant athletic trainers that cover track & field, cross country, and cheerleading.
In addition to Pierson's promotion, the sports medicine department welcomes two familiar faces to the staff. Mackenzie Haines and Alex Shoup will be returning to UT as assistant athletic trainers. Haines was a graduate assistant within the sports medicine department from 2016-18. Shoup earned her bachelor's in exercise science from UT in 2015.
Haines began her career by pursing a bachelor of science with an athletic training concentration at Ohio University.
"I'm excited to keep Mackenzie part of our program," Jones said. "She quickly built the trust of her student athletes as a graduate assistant for us. Â I know she will bring a tremendous amount of energy and enthusiasm to our staff as a full-time assistant athletic trainer."
Shoup went on to earn her masters of science in physical education from the University of New Mexico following her graduation from UT. Prior to her return to the UT sports medicine department, Shoup spent a year at California State University as an athletic trainer, working closely with the women's basketball team and acting as a liaison for the athletic training education program.
"I'm happy to bring Alex home," Jones added. "As a former student, Alex is a wonderful young professional with a strong set of personal and professional skills that will be a fantastic addition our sports medicine team."Â
