TOLEDO, Ohio – A school-record 19 University of Toledo student-athletes were named to the 2018 Academic All-MAC football team, the conference office announced today. The previous high for UT was 14 in 2000. Last year's squad had 13 honorees.
Toledo's total of 19 Academic All-MAC honorees was tied for the second highest in the Mid-American Conference. Western Michigan led the league with 20 selections, while Ball State and Toledo each had 19.
"We are very proud of the academic achievements of our players, and especially those who made the Academic All-MAC Team," said head coach Jason Candle. "It certainly is a challenge to balance the demands of being a Division I football player and maintain a high degree of excellence in the class room. To have 19 players on our team make Academic All-MAC shows that the culture of our program is very sound. I would also like to acknowledge the support of our Student-Athlete Academic Services staff, as well as the professors, instructors and counselors on our campus whose efforts are critical to the academic success of our student-athletes."
The Academic All-MAC honor is for student-athletes who have excelled in athletics and academics. Â To qualify, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. Â First-year students and transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award.
