MACON, Ga. – Senior Pinyada Kuvanun collected the second tournament win of her Rocket career on Tuesday to help Toledo wrap up its fall season with a runner-up finish at Mercer's Idle Hour Collegiate Championship. UT finished with a team score of 28-over par 893 (298-298-297) and trailed only the host Bears' mark of six-over par 870 (286-287-297) on the par-72, 6,083-yard layout at the Idle Hour Golf & Country Club.
"It was another strong event for these ladies," Head Coach Jenny Coluccio said. "The course was challenging with two different grasses to play from, and we made the adjustments quickly. While we counted a few bigger numbers than we would have wanted, they continued to fight and focus forwards."
Kuvanun entered today's play in third place and three strokes out of the lead. She opened her round red-hot with three birdies in her first four holes. After making the turn at three-under, Kuvanun birdied No. 11 and No. 13 to get to five-under. She then birdied No. 17 before bogeying No. 18 to finish with a career-best five-under par 67.
"I feel very happy with winning the tournament and helping the team finish second," Kuvanun said. "I just want to say thank you to the coaches for helping me find the way to bring back my confidence and to my teammates for always supporting me."
Â
Kuvanun tallied a tournament-best 17 birdies and joined 36-round leader Terese Romeo of Mercer (70-70-71=211) as the only individuals to finish the event under-par.
"Pinyada hit the ball beautifully this event, better than I have ever seen," Coluccio said. "She had struggled a bit through the middle of the fall with ball striking, and we felt it was a matter of time before she put it all together. She's a dynamic all-around player!"
Â
Junior Saranlak Tumfong (73-77-75) also registered a Top 20 finish for the Rockets with a nine-over par 225 (73-77-75) to tie for 16th place. Senior Pimchanok Kawil tied for 23rd place at 11-over par 227 (77-76-74), while senior Natcha Daengpiem tied for 27th place at 14-over par 230 (76-74-80). Junior Thunpijja Sukkasem rounded out the Rocket lineup by tying for 71st place at 36-over par 252 (83-82-87).
Â
Junior Donchanok Toburint competed as an individual and placed 68th at 32-over par 248 (83-78-87).
Â
Toledo will now set its sights on its spring season which will begin with the Grand Canyon Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. on Feb. 23-24.
"The team's hard work and continued focus on the process is truly paying off little by little," Coluccio said. "While at moments it hasn't shown in our scores, the gains the ladies have made are tremendous. After a short break, we are ready to head into the offseason motivated to work in specific areas and towards our goals for April."
