Toledo, Ohio - University of Toledo women's soccer players senior
Hannah Scafaria and freshman
Ashton Cassel were awarded All-MAC honors, the Mid-American Conference announced today. Scafaria was named to the All-MAC first team while Cassel was named to the conferences' All-Freshman squad.
Scafaria dominated UT's offense this season, amassing 14 goals and one assist in 19 matches. Scafaria's efforts moved her to third-place all-time at UT for most goals scored in a single season behind Molly Cornwell (2007) and Corrie Hasenjager (2000) who both netted 15. The forward ended the year with the most goals in the conference, two up over Bowling Green's Erica Hubert. At the peak of her season, Scafaria was also ranked second in the nation for total goals and fifth in the nation for goals-per-game. Her first-team recognition makes her the second Rocket since head coach
TJ Buchholz' hiring to be recognized with the honor (
Isa Echeverri 2016, '17)
"Hannah had a special season this year and it is great to see her get this recognition from the conference," Buchholz said. "To see what Hannah has overcome in her career, bounce back from those significant injuries, and lead the conference in scoring is a tremendous accomplishment. I am very happy for her."
Cassel was a cornerstone in Toledo's midfield this season. Appearing in all 19 matches, Cassel scored one goal and assisted in four others. Cassel was very active on the field and contributed to Toledo earning five shutouts this season. With Cassel's assistance, the Midnight Blue and Gold also ended the regular-season with the fourth-least goals allowed in the conference (23). Cassel is the second Rocket in the Buchholz era to earn All-Freshman recognition, with goalkeeper
Madison Perrin earning the honor last season.
"Ashton had a strong freshman campaign this year," Buchholz said. "She was an instrumental part of our midfield this season and really helped us be a dangerous team in the attack. There was a lot of quality freshmen in the conference this season and it is great to see Ashton recognized as a top young player by the conference. We are very happy for her."
