Toledo, Ohio - The University of Toledo softball team announced its schedule for the 2019 season today. Season highlights include a March 2 date against defending national champion Florida State, contests against four top-50 NCAA programs, and a mid-season matchup against Michigan.
Â
"It's a good mix of really challenging teams like Florida State, Michigan, Central Florida, and also a good mix of travel," said first-year head coach Joe Abraham. "We have the Florida trip and then we have some closer trips like UT-Chattanooga and Indiana. So it's a good balance for us."
Â
The Rockets start the year with five-straight road tournaments, the first of which is a five-game weekend at Northern Iowa. Toledo will spend two weekends in the Sunshine State as well, playing in the UCF (March 1-3) and USF (March 8-10) tournaments; UT and No. 1 FSU faceoff in Toledo's fourth game of the UCF tournament.
Â
UT then returns to Toledo for the home opener against Kent State on March 22. In addition to the five tournaments, the Midnight Blue and Gold will play 14 home contests and 12 away contests this year. Notable games include the I-75 rivalry series against Bowling Green, March 29-30, and an April 3 road game against the Wolverines. Rocket fans will also be treated to six home games to close out the regular season before the Mid-American Conference tournament kicks off on May 8.
Â
Last year, UT reached 30 wins for the first time since 1995, finishing the 2018 campaign with a 35-23 (16-7 MAC) record and a share of the Mid-American Conference West Division title. First baseman Bailey Curry became the first Toledo softball student-athlete to earn MAC Freshman of the Year. Curry and junior pitcher Kailey Minarchick were each named to the First-Team All-MAC squad as well, while senior Ashley Rausch made the second team and freshman Kylie Norwood was selected to the All-Freshman squad.
