TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Sophomore Athena Welsh paced Toledo with a 17th-place finish to lead the Rockets to a ninth-place team result in the NCAA Great Lakes Regionals on Friday morning at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course.
The ninth-place finish as a team is UT's best finish since a third-place showing at the regional meet in 2014. Toledo scored 251 points to follow eighth-place Dayton by just two.
Welsh finished the 6k course in a time of 20:58 for her best time at that distance this season. In doing so, Welsh was 72 positions better than her finish a year ago and earned the Rockets first All-Great Lake Region honor in three years.
Follow Welsh was a pair of strong top 50 performances by seniors Joan Jepkirui and Janelle Noe. Jepkirui clocked in at 21:31 to take 47th place and Noe was just behind at 21:32 for 49th place.
Another senior, Stephanie Barlow, was the fourth runner in the Midnight Blue & Gold to cross the stripe. Barlow came across in 58th place with a time of 21:39.
Sophomore Zita Molnar rounded out the scoring for UT with an 80th-place mark, finishing in 22:08.
Junior Jennifer Lichter (22:30) and senior Delainey Phelps (22:39) contributed 99th and 107th-place marks to the team.
"Athena ran a great race up front to lead the team," said Toledo head coach Linh Nguyen. "We had to sub out Petronela (Simiuc) due to some leg issues, but Zita stepped in and ran strong for us as our fifth runner. Overall, it was another solid day for the women and I'm proud of the fight they've shown this year."
Michigan won the meet with 71 points in large part due to a pair of top three finishes. Katherine Receveur of Indiana won the individual title in 20:34.
