LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Toledo women's cross country team finished 17th in the Pre-National Invitational on Saturday morning at Tom Sawyer Park.
"We got out a little slow today," said Toledo head coach Linh Nguyen. "We had to do a lot of extra work through the middle, but I'm pleased with where we are as a team going into the conference championships."
Sophomore Athena Welsh and senior Joan Jepkirui continue to lead the Rockets with a 78th-place finish and a 94th-place finish, respectively. Welsh broke the 21:00.0 mark in the 6k in her first race of this distance this season by completing the course in 20:59.8. Jepkirui was just behind, finishing in 21:20.6.
Senior Petronela Simiuc was back in action for the Rockets after missing the Roy Griak Invitational and finished 114th with a time of 21:19.6.
Senior Stephanie Barlow and junior Jennifer Lichter rounded out the scoring times for the Midnight Blue in Gold with finishes of 123rd place for Barlow and 159th place for Lichter.
"We beat some good teams today, regionally ranked teams, and a top 25-team in Missouri," said Nguyen. "When we put together a complete race, I think we will be pretty good."
In the afternoon race, senior Janelle Noe paced two Rocket runners in 53rd place. Noe finished in a time of 22:08.0. Olivia Chinn also ran in the afternoon, finishing 89th and clocking a 22:33.4 time.
The Rockets are off for two weeks to prepare for the Mid-American Conference Championships on Saturday, Oct. 28 in Oxford, Ohio.
