TOLEDO, OH – Toledo senior tight end Michael Roberts (Cleveland, OH) was today named first-team All-America by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). The FWAA All-America Team is one of the five All-America teams in the country recognized by the NCAA in determining consensus All-America status.
Â
Roberts caught 43 passes for 514 yards and led the nation's tight ends with 15 touchdown receptions, seven more than the next-nearest tight end. He is the eighth Rocket and the first since Eric Page to earn first-team All-America honors. Roberts joins Page (2010), Gene Swick (1975), Chuck Ealey (1971), Mel Long (1970, 1971), Curtis Johnson (1969), Tom Beutler (1967) and Dan Bukovich (1938) as UT's first-team All-Americans.
Â
"This is a great honor for Michael," said Toledo head coach Jason Candle. "For a tight end to catch 15 touchdown passes in one season is almost unheard of. He was a key factor in our offense, both as a receiver and as a blocker, something that probably goes overlooked by most people. It's great to see him get the recognition he deserves."
Â
"I'm very excited and a little bit humbled to be named All-American," said Roberts. "It is a great honor for me and also recognition for our team, as well. I have to give a lot of credit to our offense and to our coaching staff. I had a great quarterback in Logan Woodside, and coaches and teammates who believed in me."
Â
Roberts, a first-team All-MAC honoree this season, broke the Toledo record for touchdown catches in a season previously held by Lance Moore (14 in 2004). He shattered school record for TD receptions by a tight end, formerly held by Don Seymour (9 in 1973). He had three TD catches in one game against both Western Michigan and Bowling Green.
Â
Roberts will play in his final game in the Midnight Blue and Gold when the Rockets take on Appalachian State in the Raycom Media Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, AL on Dec. 17.
