Football - Toledo defense vs. Ohio State

Rockets Stopped by Ohio State Defense, 38-0

9/19/2009 7:45:00 PM

CLEVELAND, OH - The Toledo Rockets had high hopes that they could repeat their performance against a school from a week ago in their matchup with Ohio State at Cleveland Browns Stadium on Saturday. But they could never find an answer against No. 11 Buckeyes, falling 38-0 before a near-sellout crowd of 71,727.

Ohio State (2-1) outgained the Rockets in total yardage, 522-210. OSU sophomore quarterback Terrelle Pryor hurt UT with his arm and legs, throwing for 262 yards and three TDs while rushing for a season-high 110 yards and one score.

Toledo (1-2), coming off a 54-38 victory over Colorado at home last week, was never able to get in its spread offense in gear against an aggressive Buckeye defense. UT senior quarterback Aaron Opelt, who entered the game leading the nation on total offense (437.0 yards per game) connected on 22-of-45 passes for 197 yards. The Rockets' leading rusher was senior DaJuane Collins, who gained 22 yards on seven carries.

Ohio State scored touchdowns on their first two possessions on their way to a 24-0 halftime lead. Toledo, on the other hand, only managed three first down and 85 yards of total offense in the first half, and failed to enter OSU territory.

Toledo's defense had more success in the second half, holding the Buckeyes to 195 total yards and two touchdowns, adding interceptions by sophomore cornerback Andreas Ashwood and sophomore safety Mark Singer.

The Rockets' best chance to score came early in the fourth quarter when Opelt hit freshman wide receiver Eric Page with a 26-yard pass to the OSU one-yard line. But as Page fought to cross the goal line he was stripped of the ball by Kurt Coleman, and the Buckeyes recovered in the end zone for a touchback.

The Rockets will next travel to Miami, FL to face Florida International on Saturday in their final non-conference match-up of the season.
