TOLEDO - University of Toledo head coach Tim Beckman announced the appointment of Scott Satterfield and Steven Clinkscale to the Rockets' football staff.
Satterfield, who will coach the Rocket quarterbacks and serve as the passing game coordinator, comes from Appalachian State, where he was both a player and an assistant coach. He served as the quarterbacks coach at ASU for the past six seasons, during which time the Mountaineers won three consecutive NCAA FCS (formerly Division I-AA) championship titles from 2005-07. Satterfield also mentored junior quarterback Armanti Edwards, who was named the 2008 Walter Payton Award winner as the offensive player of the year in the FCS.
Clinkscale, who will coach the cornerbacks for the Rockets, coached the defensive backs at Western Carolina in 2008. Prior to that he spent seven seasons as an assistant at Ashland University.
Satterfield and Clinkscale are the latest additions to a staff that includes Mike Ward (assistant head coach/co-defensive coordinator); Matt Campbell (co-offensive coordinator - running game); Jason Candle (slot receivers/running backs); Alex Golesh (tight ends/recruiting coordinator); Patrick Graham (defensive line); and Paul Nichols (co-defensive coordinator).
"I am very pleased and excited that Scott Satterfield and Steven Clinkscale have agreed to join our staff," said Beckman. "Scott and Steven are proven coaches and quality individuals who have been important parts of winning programs."
Beckman said that he will be adding one more addition to his staff.
Scott Satterfield - Quarterbacks/Passing Game Coordinator
Scott Satterfield joins the Rockets' staff after spending both his playing and coaching career at Appalachian State. Satterfield was the Mountaineers' starting quarterback for three seasons from 1993-95, earning first-team All-Southern Conference honors as senior after leading the Mountaineers to a 12-1 record. He earned his bachelor's degree from ASU in 1996.
Satterfield began his coaching career at Appalachian State in 1998, mentoring wide receivers for one season then moving to running backs from 1999-2002. He was the quarterbacks coach for the past six seasons, assuming many of the duties of an offense coordinator, including play-calling.
Satterfield coached the top two quarterbacks in Appalachian State's history, Richie Williams and Armanti Edwards, both of whom set school records for passing, rushing yardage for quarterbacks and total offense on their way to All-America honors. Edwards, a junior, was the 2008 Walter Payton Award recipient, throwing for 2,902 yards and 30 touchdowns, and rushing for 1,169 yards and 11 TDs.
"Scott is a proven winner," said Beckman. "He has coached for three national championship teams and has coached a Walter Payton Award winner. I've known Scott for about eight years. When I was at Bowling Green, our staff got together with the offensive staffs from Appalachian State and Missouri during the spring to compare notes and exchange ideas. They ran the same spread offense at Appalachian State that we ran at Bowling Green and will be running here at Toledo. So as a coach and as a person, Scott fits in very well with what we want for our program."
Satterfield helped with the transition of Appalachian State's offense from a power-I to a spread offense in 2004. After a 6-5 season in 2004, the Mountaineers' high-powered offense was a key factor in Appalachian State winning three straight national championships from 2005-07. In those three championship seasons, the Mountaineers went 39-6, including a 34-32 win over then-No. 5 Michigan in 2007, considered by some observers to be the biggest upset in college football history.
ASU made the FCS playoffs for the fourth straight season in 2008, falling to Richmond, 33-13, in the second round. The Mountaineers finished with an 11-3 record.
Satterfield, a native of Hillsborough, NC, is married to the former Beth Burleson, a star on the ASU track team in the mid-90's. They have a daughter, Alli, and two sons, Bryce and Isaac.

Steven Clinkscale - Cornerbacks
Steven Clinkscale comes to Toledo with eight years of college coaching experience, including seven seasons at Ashland and this past year at Western Carolina. Clinkscale will coach the cornerbacks.
"Steve brings an Ohio background and great work ethic to the program," said Beckman. "He's a great mentor of young men, a fundamentally sound teacher who gets everything out of his players. We're excited that he has chosen to be a Rocket."
A native of Youngstown, OH, Clinkscale played four seasons at Ashland before moving to the sidelines as an assistant coach. During his seven seasons at Ashland, Clinkscale served mostly as a defensive secondary coach, spending his final season as the linebackers coach. As the academic liaison, AU football players routinely posted combined grade point averages of 3.0 or better.
Clinkscale mentored eight student-athletes who earned All-Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) accolades, including two Cactus Bowl (NCAA Division II All-Star game) participants and one GLIAC Defensive Back of the Year (Devin Conwell, 2005).
This past season at Western Carolina, Clinkscale worked with the Catamount defensive backs in addition to serving as Western's academic liaison.
A former defensive back at Ashland, Clinkscale was a four-year starter and a team captain. He garnered All-GLIAC honors in 1999 and honorable mention honors in 1998. He also played in the 2000 Snow Bowl, the Division II all-star game. He earned his bachelor's degree in sports science, with a concentration in therapeutic recreation in 2000.
His coaching experience began in 2000 when he returned to his hometown and volunteered at Youngstown Chaney High School, working mostly with the running backs, wide receivers and defensive backs.
Clinkscale and his wife, Jasena, have four sons: Isaiah (5) and Elijah (3), and twins Zion and Zivon (2).
