Toledo Head Coach Tom Amstutz (Toledo vs. Iowa State - 9/22/07)
(on the victory)
"We've been doing our job each day and our senior leadership helped us through the rough times. Our players had the belief that we were going to win. Our players didn't have their heads down throughout the game. We worked and battled hard in practice and it paid off. We deserve to have something good happen to us with all the hard work we put in."
(on the blocked field goal)
"I don't' think we deflected the ball, but we had a great push up the middle. Iowa State's kicker just missed it a little bit."
(on the special teams)
"We brought Jalen (Parmele) to help us out and great through some things. Some of our other starters like Greg Hay were out there helping us tonight."
(on Barry Church's play in the fourth quarter)
"Barry Church kept making play after play for us. The whole defense stepped up and showed how much heart they really had in them."
(on airing out the ball a little more)
"We like to mix it up. That's part of what we do. We have confidence in our receivers like Stephen Williams."
(on overcoming adversity)
"We went through adversity in this game against a good opponent like Iowa State. You will have ups and downs in this game. They have a quarterback that has started 39 straight games, so he knows how to win."
Iowa State Head Coach Gene Chizik
(comments about playing back-to-back games that came down to the final seconds)
"When it comes time to deliver, we have to step it up and we couldn't do it twice in a row. It was comedy of errors on our special teams tonight all the way through, and it starts with us as coaches. We have got to get that fixed quickly. I couldn't tell if it (the blocked kick) was blocked or not. Most likely, it was partially blocked, but again I'm not really sure. It was just a special-teams meltdown."
(comments on Toledo's 88-yard kickoff return in the fourth quarter)
"It changed the whole game, right there. We missed him (Jalen Parmele) at least three or four times. They (Toledo) did a great job with their special teams all night. The bottom line is we didn't tackle real well. It was a special-teams meltdown. We didn't really do anything well on special teams tonight when it came to covering kicks."
Toledo RB Jalen Parmele
(comments on kickoff return)
"Everyone was hitting their blocks and the hole opened up. I took some patient steps and then I just took off. I was a little past the 50-yard line and I saw that I could take it all the way."
"We needed to get back on the winning track, especially at home. Now we have some momentum going into the Western Michigan game."
Toledo SS Barry Church
"I was just trying to keep our defense up-tempo. Everyone was doing their jobs and the tackles just opened up for me."
"I had to become a leader on the field. I was disappointed with my first three games. I just had to step up."
Toledo ROV Greg Hay
(fumble recovery)
"It was my job to force the kick. I saw the ball on the ground and I wasn't going to let the punter get it. I had a sense of urgency and just trying to fight and get the ball."
Toledo QB Aaron Opelt
"Our defense stepped it up. They played a great fourth quarter and gave the offense the opportunity to win."
(comments about WR Stephen Williams)
"He's a great player. He makes it easy for me when he runs right by people."
"We took what the defense gave us. They gave us some underneath passes and we took that. When they jumped up, that's when we went up top."
"After last week's game, I was pretty upset. I didn't want to let that happen again. I worked hard this past week to get ready for this game. We took some steps forward, but we still have some things we need to get corrected."
